The MAX4271ESA+ is a 3V to 12V current limiting hot-swap controller with autoretry, dual speed/bilevel fault protection in 8 pin NSOIC package. This circuit breaker IC designed for hot-swap applications where line card is inserted into live backplane. Normally, when line card is plugged into live backplane, card’s discharged filter capacitors provide low impedance that can momentarily cause main power supply to collapse. IC reside either in backplane or in removable card to provide inrush current limiting & short circuit protection. It includes many integrated features that reduce component count & design time. An onboard charge pump provides gate drive for a low cost, external n-FET. Integrated features like start-up current regulation, current glitch protection eliminate external timing resistors & capacitors. It has an open-drain status output to indicate fault condition & an adjustable overcurrent response time. It is used in base stations, RAID, ISDN, network routers and switches.
